Española Island

What an amazing way to walk around the oldest island in the Galápagos, with a fresh and cold garúa, or mist. Our welcome committee at Punta Suarez was composed of Española mockingbirds, sea lion pups playing in tide pools and the unique marine iguanas, which are the world’s only sea-going lizard. We crossed the Nazca booby nesting area, which was a very active place, as the littler chicks were being protected by their parents. On the other side of the area, blue-footed boobies were displaying their beautiful blue feet and their well elaborated courtship dance in their breeding ground. We can not forget about the wonderful waved albatross and we found adults and several chicks as well. Furthermore, a Galápagos hawk standing on a higher rock was observing the area carefully.

At noon, we had the great opportunity to take pleasure in a typical Ecuadorian buffet. Several dishes from different regions of the country were served.

In the afternoon we navigated to Gardner Bay on the north-eastern side of the island. Our outing here took place in the water and on the beach. This time the greeting was done by sea lions laying on the lovely white sandy beach. Some of our guests chose the kayaking option in order to discover the wildlife along the cliffs. Others explored the magnificent and fascinating underwater world. We spotted a sea turtle, a shark, and white-spotted eagle rays. Suddenly, young curious sea lions came up to play with us.

No doubt this archipelago is an endless paradise. Our experiences have a special meaning for every fortunate soul able to encounter this wild corner of the world.
