Bartholomew & Santiago Islands

The Polaris is at Bartholomew (east Santiago) and it's a cloudy morning with no rain and a gentle breeze for our early outing. There is a bit of a swell and the landing is more exciting with the Zodiacs being pushed around. This doesn’t put off anyone and all ages are seen climbing Bartholomew’s tuff cone.

Later on at the south beach we saw several sea turtles and fresh nests on the dunes and a breeding pair of oystercatchers was observed at the far end of the beach. Snorkelers weren’t disturbed too much by the swell; some of the young guests were actually enjoying the waves and riding them.

In the afternoon on the western part of the island snorkelers reported small sharks, turtles and playful sea-lions while others were playing football at the court left behind by the salt mine company in the fifties. The shore walk at low tide offered many sightings including some twenty fur seals in the grottoes.

At sunset while taking a family picture on the top deck with the Goodwin family, a whale spout is seen not far from Santiago’s coastline; a nice farewell for a very exciting week. The following acrostic was put together by the Cohen family:
