On the island of Floreana, our guests had the opportunity of seeing this species of crab. It is the hermit crab (Coenobita compressus), that lives permanently as an adult in an abandoned mollusk shell, and comes out of the bushes at night as a scavenger. It might switch shells many times during its life as the body grows up. As many other crabs, its only struggle in life is to eat and get the appropriate size as soon as possible, so to be able to reproduce and then soon die, rendering the purpose of its existence absolutely meaningless (in some sense, at least).
