Punta Espinosa, Fernandina
Seven flowering plant groups have been isolated in the Galapagos Islands long enough to constitute endemic genera. Brachycereus nesioticus, the lava cactus, is one of these seven unique angiosperms. The genus name of this rare plant is derived from the Greek "branchys" for short and the latin "cerus" for candle. Both of these words refer to this cactus's unmistakable shape. Today during our visit to Punta Espinosa, we got a very close look at these unusual plants while walking through a beautiful lava cactus garden.
