Santa Cruz Island

Conservation was the topic of the day. We spent our time in the morning visiting one of the most interesting places in Galápagos, the Charles Darwin Research Station (CDRS). We learnt about the efforts that the CDRS is making to keep the population of giant tortoises in both, healthy conditions and large numbers. They do the same with the population of land iguanas. After walking among them at the enclosures, our guests took the chance to do a short walk through town, known as Puerto Ayora, and get to know the way how people live in such isolation.

By the end of the main road of Puerto Ayora, the “endemic” buses were ready to take us all to a totally new environment, the highlands of Santa Cruz. This ever-green and lush land is the habitat for the giant tortoises found in the wild, as well as for many different species of birds, including the colorful Vermillion flycatcher who presented himself as one of the most fearless and friendly species of Galápagos.
