Espanola Island

Espanola is one of the jewels in the crown of this archipelago. It is an island that deserves a complete day, because there is so much to see, and so much to do. And that is exactly what we did today. We spent the morning and afternoon on the oldest, and one of the most beautiful islands of the Galápagos.

As someone who grew up in the Galápagos, I love birds and sea birds in particular. My highlight of the day was the waved albatross. This species is breeding on the southern edges of the island. We found a few albatross eggs, and several adults, both on the ground and flying over our heads.

Blue-footed boobies were also the stars of the day. This is their breeding season as well, and all along the trail we enjoyed their blue dances and “sky pointing.” I should mention too, the swallow-tailed gulls along the cliffs, together with the Nazca boobies and tropic birds.

The afternoon was dedicated to water activities. Swimming and snorkeling were delightful, and walking along the white sandy beach was another wonderful experience. We sent several outings of the glass-bottom boat, and took hundreds of pictures of sea lions sun bathing on the beach. I just love Espanola.
