Fernandina Island

Today we had a great experience on the island of Fernandina. A day like this is difficult to explain since too many feelings and too many ideas rush through my body at an incredible speed, too quickly for me to catch up. There are few words that have been invented already that can explain the feelings that these islands create in you. “Beautiful” is one of them and is a simple word that I could use when looking at the endless fields of lava flows, mostly black in color, but even the dark color of the lava would be something to admire in a place like this. After an incredible nature walk with frequent sightings of flightless cormorants, sea lions, penguins and more marine iguanas than you can ever imagine, we finally ended up back on the Polaris. A Galápagos sea lion turned to watch us leave as we crossed to where the lava met the sea.

Finally, with time enough to think back on our own personal experiences of the day, it is easy to end up even more confused, not knowing which experience has been the best. English, Spanish, the language doesn’t matter because there are not enough superlatives in either language to explain ones feelings when falling in love. And yes, I fell in love with these islands a long time ago, and I am still waiting to learn the words that would let me explain my love for them.
