Bartolome Island

Today we celebrated the first Polaris Olympics ever. Sue Perin, our family coordinator, organized the groups at the beach of Bartolome Island. There were three teams, which represented three lands: the Super G land, the Kirkmenistan and the booby land. Each team had people under 18 as well as people over 18, and they all had a blast!

Competitions such as the Galápagos animal relay, like swimming around a Zodiac in a marine iguana fashion and the crab-penguin-sea lion races, brought great fun and a lot of good laugh to all of our guests that enjoyed the Olympics.

Names for the teams were chosen by the participants. The Super G’s decided to get the name after one of our Galápagos “cow boys,” the panga drivers or pangueros of the Polaris. Super G (G for Giovanni) is an excellent driver, but overall, a wonderful person who loves kids, because he is a big kid at heart.

The “Kirkmenistaners” chose their name after our video chronicler, Kirk Sellinger, who has made a wonderful video production of this trip, but is also known for his good humor and vitality.

The booby team chose the name after one of the big favorites of the week, the blue-footed boobies. We have seen them dancing, we have seen their first hatchlings, and now we have seen them competing for the first prize in the Polaris Olympics.

The three teams performed at their best. They were very even and the judges had a difficult time deciding who the champion was. After all, we all won this week. The beauty of Galápagos will be in our hearts for ever!
