Santa Cruz Island
There is a place in the Galápagos where the tortoises are very healthy and live together with human beings, in harmony. There is a place where a couple of conservation organizations are working hard to preserve the native species of flora and fauna. There is a place where I meet every week with the young people that one day will decide the future of these islands. This is Santa Cruz, one of the largest islands in the Galápagos Archipelago, and located right in the heart of it.
During our visit to the different sites on this island, we encountered all of what we expected to see. First of all, we found Diego and George (one of Lonesome George’s girlfriends is in today’s photo), the famous male tortoises of the Charles Darwin Research Station. Then we were delighted with the fabulous meal we had in at the charming Altair Restaurant, in the highlands of Santa Cruz.
Later we found tortoises in the wild; several huge males walking through the humid vegetation and soft grasses at 1200 feet in elevation. New species of birds were spotted in the giant Scalesia forest, along with epiphytes and orchids.
Our guests now have been part of yet another unique and lovely place in the Galápagos. Today will always be in their memories and hearts. How could someone forget the island where we met the giant tortoises?
