Floreana Island

We have nice, calm seas this morning, and the winds are blowing softly on my face. Here I am, south of the Equator again! It is hard for me to believe that less than a month ago, I was among the pack ice and polar bears on vacation with Lindblad Expeditions in Franz Josef Land, Russia! Life is certainly full of surprises. I am now walking amid friendly sea lions, fearless blue-footed boobies, and swimming in tropical waters, working for Lindblad in the Galápagos.

Ever since I came to the Galápagos, I knew there was something extra special about this region. The incredible flora and fauna enchanted me. A young biologist couldn’t have asked for anything better than what life was offering me when I got this job as naturalist guide. Now, ten years later, I still strongly believe the same. Studying the process of evolution on these islands, as revealed to Charles Darwin almost a hundred and seventy years ago, has helped me understand the importance of the islands nowadays: as an unspoiled land where organisms can maintain their original and natural behaviors.

Our visit today to Floreana Island gave us a glimpse of this unique and pure island character and much, much more. Marine iguanas, blue-footed boobies, and a variety of shore birds, were spotted on our early Zodiac ride along the coast of Post Office Bay. Later, we anchored at Champion Island for snorkeling and glass bottom boating. The snorkeling was probably our guest’s favorite experience. Sea lions appeared at the site and with great enthusiasm joined in, twirling and spinning among us. It was hard to tell who was having more fun! The sea lions seemed to be teasing us with their incredible underwater ballet. We had a terrific encounter and I think nobody could ask for a better day than today!
