Floreana and Isabela Islands
What an exciting day! It is not easy to summarize all the wonderful sightings we had today. From dolphins and sea lions to giant tortoises and flamingos, this has been a day that will be stored forever deeply in our minds.
Snorkeling was awesome, we felt just like we were immersed in huge aquarium where hundreds of colorful tropical fish and acrobatic and playful sea lions were our companions. Some of our guests this week had even the thrill to swim with a huge group of bottle-nosed dolphins. Hundreds of dolphins were spotted underwater. Lynn Fowler, our expedition leader, mentioned something that can help you understand why this event was so spectacular. She has been guiding in the Galápagos for a little longer than twenty five years. Today she had her best snorkeling experience ever with dolphins – the best view, and the largest group. Later at noon all of us encountered the same huge pod on our way going to Isabela Island. These beloved mammals were traveling with us for some minutes producing joy and delight in their observers.
In the afternoon we visited Puerto Villamil, a picturesque fishing town located in southern Isabela Island. In this place there is a brand new giant tortoises’ breeding center. In this place, scientists and Galápagos National Park wardens are doing titanic efforts trying to restore the populations of these majestic reptiles. Late in the evening we finally came back with a sweet feeling of satisfaction in our hearts. A feeling provoked by the intimate interaction we had with the natural world today. Beauty, wilderness and conservation, colliding in an exquisite way.
