Isabela and Fernandina Islands
We had a marvelous day, the weather was just perfect and we are feeling the warm breeze coming from the north. This is the beginning of the transition time when the dry cold season starts to fade and the warm wet season is showing its first signs on the archipelago.
We started our day crossing the Equator line and observed the semi-collapsed Ecuador volcano with it caldera floor and old lava flows surrounding an extinct cinder cone.
Some Brydes whales (a.k.a Tropical whale) were observed around these very plankton-rich waters but they didn’t stay for long
As we arrived to our visitor site known for its beautiful scenery and wild life we went on a Zodiac ride along the coast of Punta Vicente Roca, we encounter there many Galápagos fur seals, very active marine iguanas basking under the equatorial sun, lots of blue footed boobies, Nazca boobies, and a couple of little groups of Galápagos penguins.
One of the main attractions of this place are the Pacific green sea turtles that are showing now interest in each other as the mating season is just beginning.
After lunch we continued our navigation towards our next destination – the island of Fernandina – and upon arrival, some went snorkeling and many sea turtles we found at that site. The real surprise however was the swimming, playing and jumping pod of bottle nosed dolphins. As soon as possible we went on our Zodiacs to join them as long as they stayed around. The snorkeling group also had their brief encounter with these beautiful gentle creatures.
We all came aboard after this amazing experience and went on to the afternoon’s expedition to Punta Espinoza and almost all the males marine iguanas were very active, and colorful specially those looking for a territory, this aggressive mating behavior is very important as they can be preferred by the females that look for a potential mate.
Galápagos is at a very special moment since many species are mating and because the weather is just wonderful, we know how important all this changes are for the ecosystem and for all the process of natural selection, with out these natural changes life wont be as diverse.
