How should I see this day? Is it the beginning of a new year, or the ending of another year? Should we perceive life as an empty bag of surprises, looking towards the future, or as a collection of memories and happy thoughts of the past? Or maybe as a combination of both.
Galápagos has given us a wonderful year. We have learnt through the many guests that have visited the Polaris in 2004, through great experiences in these 365 days. We have seen frigates growing up, and albatrosses taking off for their first time. We have observed baby sea lions learning while they play, and plants dropping off their leaves to become dormant in the long dry season. Many happenings, such a wealth of knowledge! Calm seas and rough seas, sunny and cloudy days, they have all built up a fantastic year where we accomplished numerous dreams, and where lots of others emerged. And we have ahead of us 365 new days of discovery. Who knows how many iguanas we’ll see swimming in 2005, or how many penguins we’ll witness chasing their fish underwater. Maybe there is a whale waiting for us in June, or around October. Infinite possibilities for a year that is about to be born, so many challenges that will allow us to grow up and to enjoy being alive. Hopefully this New Year will also bring good things to Galápagos flora and fauna. Through the Galápagos Conservation Fund created by Lindblad Expeditions we have been able to give so much to the great conservation programs in Galápagos, and we expect to keep doing it in 2005, and the many more years to come.
Let’s see the thirty first of 2004, as the day when the past meets the future, when dreams are redesigned and get new propulsion. In Ecuador we always burn a puppet at midnight, and of course, we have done the same on the Polaris. We burn the bad thoughts, keeping the good ones. Based on those, let’s built a better future.
