Santa Cruz Island

As we come into this bay of the second largest island, Santa Cruz, we can observe the first rays of the morning sun reflecting on the rocks, the ocean, making this beautiful island glow. We are getting ready by eight o’clock in the morning to leave on our extraordinary expedition to the Charles Darwin Research Station.

We are all empowered and eager to get to our visiting point and observe these mighty giants, the kings and queens of the islands. We arrive to the first corral where we see the babies from all the different islands, with strange looks they observe us, probably as amused of us as we are of them. Pictures start pouring in and everybody is automatically in love with these antediluvian creatures.

Our next stop is towards the corral of the star, the most famous character of the Galápagos since Charles Darwin, Lonesome George. As we approach his corral, he is chasing his two beautiful female companions – way to go George! He is pacing from one place to another, letting everybody know who is the boss of the domain. After pictures are taken and his story told, we continue to the corral of the true giants, the 6 males that pose for our very own entertainment. After this visit, shopping time!

At around midday, we are ready to go to the highlands and have our barbecue lunch prepared for us. Some will swim, some will play volley ball and some will just walk around observing nature. Right after lunch we are transported to this beautiful, almost untouched farm. Here it seems like time has not passed, like humans never existed. The tortoises eating, walking around in their own little world. We can truly say we have just spent another day in paradise.
