Española Island
This is a very good time to visit the Galápagos Islands. We just started the nice, warm season and the water temperature feels great! The water looks so pleasantly inviting and the amount of marine life seems endless.
Today we started our morning walking among marine iguanas. Soon after that, we encountered the famous and always friendly sea lions. It was very nice to find them in large colonies resting alongside the beach, pleasantly enjoying the equatorial tropical sun. Today is only our first full day in the islands, and Española seems to be the ideal start in our Galápagos trip. The wildlife sightings never seemed to end, and the panoramic view of the lava flows in contrast with the blue ocean was like a dream come true.
Right after lunch, we headed to turtle rock for our so called “deep water snorkeling.” It was a fabulous place full of marine activity. Lots of different species of fish were found, and even some sea lions were swimming around.
Some of us spent the rest of the afternoon walking along the white coralline beach, watching and enjoying how the sea lions were rolling their bodies on the sand, or even simply resting peacefully. The total lack of natural predators in this area and the amount of food found in the water make me believe that sea lion life would be the way that I would like to come back in my next life!
I was carrying my camera when I encountered a little baby sea lion resting on a log. I was looking at him curiously when I realized he was the one looking curiously at me. It was as if he was trying to tell me something, something about these islands and the innocence of the creatures that inhabit them. Well, I did not understand what the baby was trying to tell me (if I said I did, that would be the end of my career…), but you know what? Come and talk to me, and I will tell you the truth…
