Española Island

The whole idea of visiting and talking about Española Island creates a strong feeling of nature. This place has a mystic charm that takes us far back into the past. Our day started with a delicious breakfast followed by a dry landing on a nice cement jetty. The amazement of visiting a place so pristine like this was reflected on the faces of our guests. You could also see that the most of them had never seen a marine iguana before, and even better than that, sharing their habitat with sea lions and the always impressive red lava crabs. Española happens to be one of the oldest islands in this archipelago, too. It harbours a huge diversity of flora and fauna found not only in the inner areas of the island, but also in their cliff sides. It was a delight to stop and contemplate the big smiles of our guests, when at the encounter of large colonies of Nazca and blue-footed boobies, couldn’t help but take hundreds of pictures. It was by the end of the trail when, surprisingly, the largest of all the Galápagos sea birds was found, the majestic waved albatross. We did not expect it to be here yet, but once again, nothing is predictable here and anything can happen! We returned on board just on time to avoid the hit that was already building up at the island, ready to continue our adventure somewhere else.

After a short brake for lunch, it was only reasonable to get in the water, so we did! Several options for snorkeling, swimming and even to see the fish without getting wet were offered, and everybody did what they wanted to do. The snorkelers had a blast! We saw everything, starting from the tiny reef fish to the large white tipped reef sharks!

To conclude a successful day full of activities, it only made sense to spend the rest of the afternoon at the beach. We had the chance to just sit and watch at one of the largest colonies of sea lions in this archipelago, and then the sunset…what a day!
