Genovesa Island

It is always nice to wake up surrounded by nature. It is even nicer when you wake up and discover that the settings that surround you are flawless hills carved by the hand of evolution itself. The island that we visited today exponentially increased our respect for nature and its inhabitants. The amount of birds flying around us stroked their wings with the assurance of living in true paradise. The fearlessness of red-footed boobies and frigate birds could only tell us, with no words involved, the trust that should have never been lost, that should have never been compromised by us; by humans.

Early in the morning we decided to take our chances and enjoyed the refreshing calm waters of the bay. The ship dropped anchor and we immediately immersed our bodies in the blue, deep waters of the caldera. This was the nicest wake up call that we could ever imagine; after all, we are surrounded by the sea – why not to take full advantage of it?

After our brief dip, and followed by an invigorating breakfast, we headed to the beach to fully enjoy the often-called “bird island.”

The amount of birds found here is impressive. They were all flying and hovering in the sky, tempting us to try and jump off the cliff, so we could experience and enjoy even for brief seconds what they enjoy their entire lives.

Later during the snorkeling, our guests could at least mimic what flying would be like. Twisting and contorting their bodies in an environment that allow us to fly in own way, our guests enjoyed the colours of parrot, damsel and king angelfish.

I have dedicated a great portion of this writing to the ability of flying. It is not only because of my admiration of it, but also because there are so many ways to fly and we are all capable to do it; we just have to find our own way to be free, to fly…
