Bartolome Island

This beautiful small island (0.5 square miles) is one of the most interesting places to visit in the Galápagos Archipelago. There are very striking volcanic formations all over the island. Parasitic cones and lava flows make you think that the barren landscape observed on this place is extracted from a science fiction novel; it resembles the moon landscape. Landscapes are just breathtaking. The island itself is like a living representation of an idyllic dream come true. Bartolome Island offers great opportunities for photography as well. From its summit it is possible to enjoy a spectacular and unforgettable view. This view, due to its beauty, is difficult to summarize in just few words. It is composed of beautiful blue waters, young black lava flows, cinder and spatter cones, two small little golden sand beaches and the world famous pinnacle rock. Snorkeling in this particular area is wonderful. It is possible to see many colorful fish, sea stars, occasional sharks and Galápagos penguins. The experience of swimming with penguins is incredible.

Juvenile pelicans are extremely curious. Today, many of us had the luck to witness something that I will never forget. A couple of these cute young sea birds were playing with the tail of a white-tipped shark! This sighting was not only amusing, but constitutes a great proof of how approachable and indifferent animal species can be in this magical archipelago.
