Floreana Island
We started a new day by visiting the famous Post Office Bay. Pirates, buccaneers, seals and whale hunters back in the whaling times – the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries – were frequent visitors to this bay.
Some of our guests were already on the upper deck armed with binoculars by six a.m. Different types of birds were flying around the ship in flock formations, starting their daily foraging routine in the rich waters of Floreana. It was really interesting to see how the blue-footed boobies, pelicans and brown noddies were foraging in the same place where sharks were cruising, stressing even more the fact that there is nothing to be afraid of here in the Galápagos!
We then took the Zodiacs and headed to shore to pay a visit to the famous Post Office Barrel and, by leaving our post cards here, we helped an ancient tradition to stay alive, hoping that some day our letters would reach their destination.
Shortly after breakfast, we headed out for snorkeling at one of the most beautiful places we had around: Champion Island. The snorkeling experience was awesome! Sea lions played with most of us while in the water, and thousands of colorful tropical fish were seen along the long wall that surrounds the island.
After lunch we visited an area called Punta Cormorant, where the main attraction was to see flamingos. These beautiful birds were foraging at a brackish lagoon not too far from the beach area. Their pink coloration was so intense that could have been seen miles away. Our day finished with a nice sunset, precisely what we were wishing for…
