Floreana Island

There is always a lot to see in the Galápagos, however, the morning often holds the greatest magic. This morning we witnessed the colonies of sea lions awaken to the sun around La Loberia, a group of small rocky islands around Floreana. Floreana Island was for the pirates of the 18th Century a sort of “McDonalds,” a place to get fast food such as tortoises. It was also where they established a rudimentary post office barrel. Floreana is an island that has many volcanic satellite cones surrounding it, and so it offers incredible places for snorkeling and diving. Rich in history and stories, we call it the Island of Volcanoes. It has over forty eroded cones; therefore, it was a highly active location in the past. Floreana is the only place in the Galápagos where you can see flamingos all year round. The little brackish mud lagoons are perfect habitats for the large number of water boatmen (Trichorixa reticulata) and shrimp (Artemia salina) that live there. It is these organisms that are responsible for giving flamingos their beautiful color.
