Isla Carmen

The day started out with several sightings of large baleen whales, then before lunch two blue whales were seen moving at high speed to the north. We followed them for almost an hour. The two whales were obviously heading towards or away from something very quickly.

During lunch we got our answer, as a pod of orcas (also called killer whales) was seen milling about to the east of Isla Carmen. As the ship got closer the killer whales also got closer and then for about 45 minutes the whales surrounded the ship and swam from stem to stern, sometimes upside down and with their mouths open. It was a fantastic experience for everyone on board!

We later found out from some local whale researchers that the killer whales had just a few hours earlier killed a Bryde's whale.
