We are close to the southeast end of the Baja California Peninsula, at an area called Gorda Banks. We have been watching humpback whales since sunrise, and are surrounded by several whales, whose blows we see at different intervals in various directions from the ship.

Around 10:00 in the morning three humpback whales move close to the boat and start cruising beside us. These gentle giants surface to breath at irregular intervals in pairs or trios, allowing us to feel their power in the way they swim and in how they sometimes wave their pectoral fins and flukes out of the water.

In this picture we see the moment when two of them surfaced simultaneously to breathe -- very close to our ship.
