Los Islotes and Ensenada Grande

Have you ever wondered what a sea lion’s view of the underwater world is? Although we weren’t nearly as fast or agile as these entertaining mammals are in the water, we had a chance to enter their realm – playing, observing, and exploring among the fish. Perhaps you’ve also wondered what a brown booby’s roost looks like, or how a Sally lightfoot crab scuttles along the rocks? Pungent aromas off the guano frosted rocks wafted on the morning breeze as we cruised along Los Islotes in the Zodiacs, investigating the habitats of the creatures that live both above and below the rocky outcroppings. Yes, indeed, it was a delightful morning, cruising and snorkeling.

Beyond Los Islotes was our next destination, a protected cove known as Ensenada Grande located on Isla Partida, welcoming us with its aquamarine waters and ice-cream sculpted volcanic red cliffs. If you wanted to walk up the arroyo, the naturalists were at the ready to help point out the purple flowering nightshade, lizards, chuckwallas, and elusive canyon wrens. Reach for a paddle, and the afternoon was spent tucking into one of the cove’s many nooks and crannies via kayak. Thanks to the recent rains, the scenery was simply breathtaking with the flowers blooming and greenery stretching all along the steep hillsides. How could the activities of today possibly be topped? Dinner ashore, with a bonfire, of course! A delicious meal served on the beach filled our tummies – but we made sure to save room for the dessert: s’mores toasted over the bonfire. Yum!

Passing under twinkling stars in the night sky, we returned to the Sea Bird, complete with our day’s discoveries. Onward, this evening, towards Cabo San Lucas and Magdalena Bay, where more adventures await us. Pillows welcome us to bed, as visions of sea lions dance in our sleepy heads.
