Astoria, Oregon

The rosy dawn broke over the wooded hills of Astoria, Oregon as we pulled up to our dock. The wooden piers and fishing boats that lined the waterfront of Astoria reflected the rich nautical tradition of this Columbia River community, the oldest settlement in Oregon.

After breakfast, our guests departed the Sea Bird for the Columbia River Maritime Museum. Here, they learned about the history of this community located near the treacherous mouth of the Columbia River, the dreaded bar that has inspired fear and trepidation in the minds and souls of many a seaman.

Following a hearty lunch, we departed for Fort Clatsop, where the Corps of Discovery spent a cold and wet winter in 1805-1806. While wintering at Fort Clatsop, the men of the Corps of Discovery gathered their strength and prepared supplies for their eastward journey the following spring. Following our visit to the fort, some of our guests chose to visit the Astor Column located on a hill high above the city of Astoria. Others traveled to the Cape Disappointment Interpretive Center on the north bank of the river and viewed a wonderful exhibit on Lewis and Clark. As the sun sets on our journey of discovery this week, we will look back fondly on our adventures today in Astoria.
