Cruising the Columbia

In early autumn of 1805 Lewis and Clark’s Corps of Discovery traveled down the Columbia River past Wallula Gap to a place where Clark described a rock formation appearing as a beaver hat on the shore of the river. They put ashore and inspected the strange outcrop.

Today while traveling upstream on that same Columbia River aboard the Sea Bird, in the Wake of Lewis and Clark, we too put ashore here and gave it our inspection as well. It is now an Oregon State Park, which provides us a pleasant place to stretch our legs and walk along a trail to its base.

Though the Corps was traveling in dugout canoes that were hugging the shoreline, we have been on our comfortable cruise ship. We anchored and went ashore in our Zodiac inflatable craft. It became a delightful two-hour interlude, the brightest spot in our very pleasant day.
