Today we had breakfast in Washington, lunch in Oregon, a snack in Idaho, and returned to Washington for dinner. Two jet boats met the Sea Bird near Clarkston, Washington and took us on a day trip nearly 60 miles up the free flowing Snake River. Impressive columnar basalt formations were the backdrop for sightings such as Rocky Mountain bighorn sheep, mule deer, and golden eagles. Before any of these places had their now familiar names, ancient people pecked designs (petroglyphs) onto the surfaces of these walls along the Snake River. Nearby were pictographs - designs painted on the rock surfaces. The Lewis and Clark Expedition also viewed petroglyphs and pictographs as they journeyed towards the Pacific Ocean.
