There are many images that go through a person's mind when the word Alaska is mentioned, whether or not the state has been visited by that person. Its reputation is as vast as the state. It is much more than snow and ice, although glaciers have had a tremendous impact on the magnificent landscape here. It is wild and rugged, it challenges the emotions and tantalizes the senses. It is beautiful and diverse, and, at times, formidable and overwhelming. The brown/grizzly bear (Ursus arctos) is a powerful symbol of wilderness and of Alaska. It is awed, revered and often feared. It commands and deserves respect. This is the attitude of Lindblad Expeditions whenever we encounter any kind of wildlife. We strive to leave places and their inhabitants undisturbed while we absorb, learn and contribute what we can. To be able to see a bear or an eagle or a whale in a natural environment is an exceptional experience that creates a lifetime memory. Alaska is a place where this, and more, is possible.
