After a while we encountered some active humpback whales, which migrate to this area in the wintertime. We observed a number of different behaviors from these animals, including breaching, lobtailing, and fin slapping. The humpback whale has the longest pectoral fins of all the whales (about 15 feet) and the whale in this photograph is upside down, waving both fins in the air. The precise meaning of these behaviors continues to elude us.
