From there, the ship cruised toward Isla Rasa, a photographer's and wildlife lover's paradise. We walked amongst the hundreds of thousands of squawking and jostling Heermann's gulls and elegant terns that stake territories on this bit of flat rock in the rich waters of the Gulf's midriff islands.
Our entire day seemed to remind us over and over that we were traveling in some of the world's most productive waters. After leaving Rasa, we encountered more fin whales and, as we watched, two sperm whales surfaced in their midst. Throughout the rest of the afternoon, whales and seabirds were with us. They even escorted us toward the sunset as we spotted a distant sperm whale's tail sinking into the water just as the sun began to sink toward the Baja peninsula's skyline.
