Isla Monserrate
Our Christmas was a day of sunshine, relaxation and soaking up the last bit of magic from this rich and diverse place called Baja California. After a leisurely morning and a delicious Christmas brunch, we climbed into the Zodiacs one last time, and sped to shore. The southwest corner of Isla Monserrate offered great protection from the northerly breeze, so we went exploring. Some chose long hikes inland, in search of a ridge top view, while others chose lounging on the beach with a good book. There was tidepool exploration, where a "nudi colony" of abundant cryptically colored nudibranchs was discovered, and afternoon snorkeling from the beach. Keen eyes spotted hidden octopus, camouflaged eels, prickly porcupine fish and the aptly named chocolate chip seastar. Fossils embedded in ancient seafloor studded the bluffs behind us.
As the sun dropped toward the horizon, we reluctantly packed our things and left this lovely place. Back aboard the Sea Lion, we celebrated with our familiar traveling companions and new found friends, as we prepared to say goodbye to the Sea of Cortez. Merry Christmas to all, and to all a good night.
