Boca de Soledad / Hull Canal / La Entrada
The well-protected Bahia Magdalena became our home for the past three days. Surrounded by majestic sand dunes, we had a wonderful time in gray whale territory. This morning we woke up to go out and take another close look at the once called “devil fish,” that we know today as “friendly whales.” Every close encounter we had with them was so different from the others; we witnessed many kinds of behaviors. Mothers and calves strolling in and out of the lagoon to the Pacific Ocean through Boca de Soledad (Mouth of Solitude) would occasionally dive right under our Zodiacs. Some of these amazing animals would also swim slowly, escorting our boats for several minutes.
The hook was raised and lunch was served on the sun deck while the Sea Lionwas bound to La Entrada. Rumors were right: pizzas were excellent, as well as the spectacular Hull Canal, which we sailed for a second time on this trip to start our journey towards Cabo San Lucas. While sailing on the canal, we saw bottlenose dolphins and had beautiful sightings of ospreys, mergansers and many different species of shore birds. Once near La Entrada, a group of common dolphins joined us to ride our bow. Shortly after that, I could take the guests through a forty-five minute trip through Mexico with my slide show “Mexico Lindo,” to share with them some of the biological and cultural diversity of my country. To end my talk, a humpback whale breached repeatedly on the horizon to bring the day to completion.
