Cabo San Lucas, Baja California

Photographers and early risers gathered on the bow of the Sea Lion after a 5:45 a.m. optional wake-up call, in anticipation of the beautiful light that sunrise would provide on Lands End at Cabo San Lucas.

Captain Graves maneuvered the ship into several positions for our compositions of the towering majestic rocks. It was a wonderful photographic study in textures, scale, colors and shapely forms.

After breakfast our expeditioners had the choice of shopping in the port town, a nature and bird walk, or snorkeling. The shoppers discovered Taxco jewelry, Mexican crafts and the internet café. The birders found the endemic gray thrasher, and a pyroloxia as they hiked among the flowering desert landscape. Snorkelers stayed cool in a secluded inlet, viewing many underwater marvels.

Following a sunny BBQ lunch outside on the ship’s deck, we left the busy resort town and headed north into the Gulf of California, continuing our adventure.

It didn’t take long before Naturalist Adrian Cerda spotted 3 killer whales. Pixels and film were blazing as we observed and recorded this special treat of a pod of orcas for more than an hour. It became apparent that they were in predatory pursuit of common dolphins. We saw one killer whale toss a dolphin high into the air, killing it. One of the whales also lob tailed several times on the surface.
