Hell’s Canyon and Clearwater River

Today we presented two opportunities to the guests of the Sea Lion. For some it was a jetboat trip some sixty miles from Clarkston, Washington, into the high canyon walls of the Snake River. Hells Canyon by jetboat is an exciting and spectacular adventure. The wildlife, the rock formations, the vivid autumn colors all add to the surging sense of power that the rapid navigation of the river by jetboat evokes. Whether seen for the very first time, marveling at each new bend of the river, or revisiting it after many years and remembering trips of days gone by, it is a powerful experience.

For others it was a trip of a more contemplative nature. The Clearwater River, running low and clear on this autumn day provided a sense of quiet magic. As we visited campsites along its banks, where Lewis and Clark once stood on their Voyage of Discovery, we felt a kinship with them over the years. As passages were read from the journals they wrote, we could visualize their hardships and their triumphs. Visiting site after site we became immersed in re-living those historic days. Today has made our voyage in the Wake of Lewis and Clark, on the Sea Lion, a bit of history that will continue to live in our minds.
