A Zodiac ride up through the lake behind Lower Monumental Dam...

The journey takes our guests towards the free-flowing Palouse River, passing some of the best views and examples of the Columbia River Basalt flows. The carving done by the "Bretz floods" is also very apparent. The weather was great, along with the bird watching and storytelling about the ancient people who once populated this confluence of the Palouse and Snake Rivers.

The one-and-a-half-hour zodiac ride traveled approximately two miles, making a winding path towards the Palouse River, through a system of canyons approximately 300 feet in height. The canyons were beautifully shadowed in the early morning fall light! A high point for everyone was the occasional pause and slow, quiet drift in the meandering current, surrounded by birdsong mixed with the wafting scent of Big Sage Brush, which is in its full fall bloom of small scented, yellow flowers.
