Isla San Francisco and Los Islotes, Baja California

Our adventures began this morning, in the protected and picturesque Half-Moon Bay on the western side of Isla San Francisco, some 40 miles north of La Paz. This first morning was devoted to water-based activities. We snorkeled, swam, scuba dove and some of our younger crowd rode the “banana boat.” So exciting was the ride on the banana boat, some of our “older” kids also took a spin!

The water temperature was just perfect, indeed many of us began the day in a wetsuit, but quickly discarded the wetsuit once we discovered how comfortable the water was. There were many fish to be seen, especially around the rocky outcroppings, Sergeant majors, graybar grunts, moray eels, even an octopus or two were spied.

We moved the ship in the afternoon over to Los Islotes, a small but bustling California sea lion colony, as we approached we encountered a large pod of pelagic bottlenose dolphin who escorted the boat into Los Islotes. The late afternoon was spent snorkeling among huge schools of fish, with sea lions darting through, around and by us. A truly exciting way to end our first day of adventure, here in Baja, where the desert meets the sea.
