Los Islotes, Isla Partida
There are many activities during an expedition into the Sea of Cortez and along the peninsula of Baja California. In the water there is snorkeling, diving, swimming, kayaking, and just bathing. On land there are walks, hikes, shore exploration, barbeques, rocks to climb, and dunes to run down. We had the chance to try all or just some of these activities during our week exploring where the desert meets the sea.
Our last day had many of these experiences. The morning was spent at Los Islotes, where the California sea lions have a rookery. Zodiac cruises showed us the sea birds that roost here and the sea lions that frolic, bark, and generally lounge about on the flat areas between the pinnacles. We had a chance to swim with a few of them against some current, which showed us just how well adapted they are to the ocean, and how poorly adapted we are.
Our last afternoon was spent enjoying the warm water and escaping the heat at Ensenada Grande. The photo shows that the “stationary hike” was enjoyed by those taking a break between swimming sessions while they talked about their experiences during the past week. Topics of discussion included watching dolphins and whales, water sports, card games in the lounge, reading a good book, and best of all, making new friends and getting to know special people faster than you would “on land” during only a week of time.
