Refugio Curu and Tortuga Island, Costa Rica

Our last day in Costa Rica, and our last day on our expedition through Central America and we couldn’t have asked for a better ending.

Today the morning found us anchored right in front of the wildlife refuge named Curu, this is a private refuge and farm owned by the Schutt family. Here at Curu they have been not only saving some of the last tropical dry forest left in the country, but also trying to reintroduce animals that were native to this land and were wiped out by man. As well as running a rehabilitation program for animals that have been removed from the wild, they are also reintroducing abandoned “pets,” as people realize their mistake after buying wild animals as pets.

So after our wet landing we put our shoes back on and then we were ready to explore this tropical dry forest and find out what it had to offer – and it offered a lot! Right at the very beginning of one of the trail hikes, the group was welcomed by an American crocodile, then further into the trail a black-headed trogon was spotted and the list kept on growing as we walked further into this forest: long-tailed manakin, grove-billed anis, scarlet macaws, violaceous trogon, squirrel cuckoos, howler monkeys…

After our return to ship for lunch, the vessel was repositioned to a lovely little beach where we had our last chance to enjoy the Pacific Ocean, so we took our last kayak cruise, last chance for snorkeling, swimming, throwing frisbee or just relaxing at the beach.

And just to put a good end to a great day we had an amazing sunset.
