Golfo Dulce

Today the ship gently sailed across the calm waters of the beautiful Golfo Dulce. The sunrise, combined with the blue waters and the green rain forest background promised us a 10 plus day. True enough, we began the day in kayaks and Zodiacs cruising through mangroves that revealed to us a great quantity of bird species. Upon arriving to a little countryside cantina, we reviewed the morning’s sightings while having a refreshing drink. Later, some of us walked back along the road, while others decided to continue with the kayaking experience, and no matter which way you went, the toucans, cotingas, trogons and other birds followed us, and amazed us with their grace and colors.

Before lunch, nobody could resist the call of the warm waters of this gulf, and all jumped in for a refreshing swim.

Over lunch the ship sailed across the deep bay and drew pantropical spotted dolphins to the bow for a long time. The free ride was obviously irresistible, for them as well as for us.

In the afternoon we visited Casa Orquideas, a tropical garden where the shape, the colors, and the beauty of tropical plants were at the tip of our fingers, in walkways and passes decorated with colorful birds. Looking at the flowers closely showed the presence of the giant Nephila spiders (golden orb spiders) the largest weaving spiders of the world, the strength of its web can be used to make bullet-proof vests, even if they look big and scary, they are harmless and can provide humanity with great knowledge. As we walked through the gardens, the chestnut-mandibled toucan and the mealy Amazons played in the tree tops close enough for us to get good views through the scopes. We got back to the ship knowing that the day couldn’t have been any better.
