Corcovado National Park, Penisula de Osa, Costa Rica

Well today we had our second day in Costa Rica and what a day we had! To start the morning we went on shore to the infamous Corcovado National Park, one of the largest and most pristine forests in this country. It is also one of the hardest to access, as there is no road or airport nearby. The only way to get here is ether by boat, a 6 hour hike trough tropical rain forest on an uneven trail with all your gear for camping, or in a small plane for 6 people landing on a small airstrip. We chose the first option. So as you see, this is as wild as it gets. And for this morning we were not the only ones in the park but we had many options to chose to see and experience this amazing place: a long hike through the primary rainforest, a medium hike to a refreshing waterfall, and short hike in the coastal forest. Luck was with us as we had the opportunity to see a great variety of wildlife including howler monkeys, Central American agouties, boat-billed night herons, bare-throated tiger heron, and an awesome waterfall complete with a swimming hole. We also could see numerous pairs of scarlet macaws flying right on the shoreline. The most unusual sighting of the morning was the white-lipped peccary (today’s photo) that met the short walkers along the trail. You can tell the morning was very good but the afternoon wasn’t too bad either, if you like spending an afternoon on a beautiful beach in the tropics, having a barbeque followed by some resting time with a little swimming and birding thrown in. And, as we’ve come to expect here in paradise, the day ended with a beautiful sunset as the Sea Voyager sails toward tomorrow’s adventures... So not a bad day at all wouldn’t you say?
