Coiba Island area and At Sea, Panama

Today we had our day in Panama before crossing over to Costa Rican waters. We spent some time cruising and exploring the rich waters of the biggest island of Panama. This island is the second biggest on the pacific coast of the Americas after Vancouver. Nowadays it is one of the most pristine national parks of this country. The reason for this is because before being declared a national park in 1991, Coiba was a penal colony for Panama’s most dangerous criminals. This kept the island in a good stage of preservation and a place not found easily in a guide book.

But today the island has become a beautiful place to go for a walk and look for some of its wild life including some endemic animals and a great place for scuba diving. Actually close to 80% of the ecosystem preserved in Coiba marine makes this place the third largest marine park in the world and part of the recently created marine corridor. This corridor covers Galápagos Islands, Coiba, Coco Island and the Osa Peninsula’s marine section of the park.

Today we had our share of this rich and beautiful place, our group showed an amazing solidarity and team spirit as we visited this realm of nature. In the time spent here, we were able to see a glimpse of some scarlet macaws, about four king vultures soaring, black terns, brown boobies, some pan tropical spotted dolphins and about twenty or thirty yellow bellied sea snakes, not bad huh?
