Barro Colorado Island & Panama Canal

We began a spectacular day with some guests joining the early morning stretching up on the sun deck. After breakfast we met some researchers that welcomed us to one of the most important Tropical Research Centers in this part of the world. Barro Colorado Island is a place with a long history in tropical ecology studies, and the idea of exploring its trails and surroundings with some of the researchers was exciting.

We got to see howlers, spiders and white-faced capuchin monkeys along with fresh water turtles, crocodiles and many other animals. After we returned to the vessel we began our transit through the second set of locks at the Panama Canal.

At the entrance of Pedro Miguel Locks the Sea Voyager docked next to the headquarters of the famous pasa cables, or line handlers, who are in charge of engaging the cables from the electric locomotives to the vessel, so as to guide her into the lock chamber. It was an unusual yet very impressive opportunity to see the operation of the Pedro Miguel locks from another perspective that is often hidden. Shortly afterwards, we resumed our voyage and continued easily through the Pedro Miguel and Miraflores locks. In the end we left behind this impressive achievement of humanity while the lights of the skyline of Panama City where crowning the night.
