Coiba Marine National Park, Panama
After sailing in raft water around Punta Mala, we anchored off the peaceful island of Coiba National Park. We have reached one of the most intense and unique marine national parks on the pacific coast of Central America. This national park with its stunning biodiversity was created with an extension of 675,000 acres of mangrove ecosystems, coral reefs and rainforest. Because of this, Coiba Marine National Park was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. This area is part of a marine corridor that comes all the way from Galápagos Islands in Ecuador, Malpelo in Colombia and Cocos Islands in Costa Rica. This ambit protects a myriad of species including large marine mammals from commercial fisheries in the eastern pacific
A beautiful rainbow welcomed our guests to this archipelago. In the morning we enjoy and explore with kayaks the rocky shores of the island. Birdwatching is also a great option here and our photographers had a great time looking for the best shot of a landscape or wildlife in the area. The snorkeling is also the best for this week’s voyage. We saw sea turtles, many colorful fish, also many birds like bare-throated tiger herons and the majesty of the air a king vulture. At noon we enjoy in the rangers’ station a delicious BBQ lunch, served by the Sea Voyager’s Crew.
After lunch Gustavo, our expedition leader, invite us to a “little piece of haven” the island called Granito de oro “little grain of gold”. This island, like a masterpiece of nature, allowed us to fill our spirits and try some more kayaking and snorkeling. The healthy coral finds protection from Panama’s National Authority for Environment. It was a hard time to leave the island. This was our last unforgettable experience in Panama and we will continue our adventure heading to Costa Rica.
