Coiba National Park, Panama

After navigating the whole night, we woke up with the most perfect view of a tropical island. Clear blue-turquoise waters that wash colorful shells on a white sand beach, framed by lush rain forest.

Today the Sea Voyager dropped anchor in the waters of Coiba National Park. Its main island is the largest on the Pacific side of Central America, hosting a great mosaic of ecosystems ranging from exuberant rain forest and mangroves to outstanding rocky reef structures. Therefore all the activities were water related, snorkeling, kayaking, swimming, beach combing, tide pool exploring and of course… sand castle building contest.

The first part of our day took place on this “cartoon sized island” where the main attraction was snorkeling. Floating on top of this rich ecosystem gave us the amazing chance to view the intricate relations among the inhabitants of the reef, colorful parrot fish munching of coral rocks, as well surgeon fish grazing algae from rocks like cows grazing on pastureland; damselfish defending its algae patch and Blue Jacks patrolling the limits of the reef, in search of an aware fish.

But even for the ones that stayed on land, we discovered a great area of tide pools where we found the oddest creatures of the day: purple sea stars, green sea cucumbers with orange speckles, sea slugs squirting purple ink and the most delicate brittle stars.

The afternoon was more land oriented and after a delicious barbecue lunch, some guests decided to go for a bird watching walk, which was pretty successful too. We were able to spot several species of birds’ characteristic from this area, like the bright red colored Crimson backed Tanager.

Well, as the afternoon was filtering the first colors of the sunset the Sea Voyager lifted anchor and started its navigation towards Costa Rica, and more adventures.
