Los Inocentes Farm, Guanacaste Costa Rica

The early morning sunlight caught us anchoring at Junquillal Bay in the northern province of Guanacaste, a tropical dry forest area. After a short bus ride, we arrived to Los Inocentes farm, a former cattle ranch at the base of Orosi Volcano. At Los Inocentes, most of us chose to discover the wonders of the dry forest by horseback, while others chose an adventurous tractor ride. We rode on very well behaved criollo horses that are the descendants of berberisc-blooded horses that Spaniards brought from the northern part of Africa.

Through the forest and pastures, we were amazed by the diversity of butterflies; among them were the bright blue Morphos, the yellow and black zebras, and many others. We came across troops of spider, howler and capuchin monkeys who were feeding or simply resting in the forest trees. We also saw two-toed sloths, toucans, trogons and Montezuma’s oropendolas.

After a nice BBQ lunch at the farm, we returned to the Sea Voyager. The afternoon found us snorkeling and kayaking in the calm waters of Bahia Santa Elena. A group of spotted dolphins came curiously to check the snorkelers as they were disembarking the Zodiacs. Another wonderful sunset painted the waters of this magnificent bay.
