Our last day of the voyage started in the serene landscape of a fjord named for the sounds that can be heard surrounding these placid waters. In spring, little auks (or dovekies) nest amongst the screes of the fjord, filling the air with their chattering calls. Today, only a few of these small seabirds had returned to the area but the white-covered scenery was still quite ethereal.
Zodiac cruises off the glacier highlighted the morning’s activities. A light snow added to the Arctic atmosphere. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed this final Zodiac cruise of our voyage. In the afternoon, there were a variety of activities, including a talk on climate change by Jim Kelley, a collection of images for the guest slideshow, and a cruise offshore in search of whales. This event proved quite successful despite light rain and somewhat choppy sea conditions. We spotted a number of fin whales in tight groups and some great ship-handling gave us excellent views to finish off a very unique and successful voyage to the Svalbard Arctic.
