In the morning, we left the warmth of National Geographic Endurance for a Zodiac cruise in the Melchior Islands. Under a steel gray sky and low-lying cloud cover, the icebergs and glaciers took on deep-blue turquoise colors, highly accentuating the textures. It was a little colder than previous days on the trip and we were enjoying a quintessential Antarctic morning. Add a sprinkle of humpback whales and nesting cormorants and it made for a perfect morning.
During lunch the ship repositioned to Danco Island. We summited the island for an amazing view of the surrounding Errera Channel while some of us Zodiac cruised with humpbacks.
As the sun set, the captain literally sailed into the ice and parked the ship for the night in Wilhelmina Bay. As the staff scouted for the coming day’s activities, the guests took a short walk on the sea ice to a ROSS SEAL! What an incredibly rare thing to see! It was an amazing ending to an already perfect day!
