We woke up to a sunny morning sailing through the water of North Iceland. After a morning listening to highly interesting presentations about benthic life in a cold region and modern literature of Iceland, we saw the first glimpse of our afternoon adventure, Grimsey Island. It is between dolphins, sun, and mild seas that we made our way to our next adventure.
We finally anchored at Grimsey Island. Comprised of basaltic rock and covered by luscious green vegetation, this is the northernmost inhabited island of the country. With Arctic tern protecting their chicks, gulls finding a feast to bring back to the nest, and the small but oh so beautiful Atlantic puffin, Grimsey Island was an outstanding stop and a bird paradise. This little island in the middle of the North Atlantic Ocean is the gateway to the Arctic region and allowed us to cross the polar circle. By train or by foot, we spent the afternoon exploring the wonder this island had to offer before heading back to the ship for a proper Viking feast.
