The lovely summer sunshine was certainly shining upon Haines today. Known as the “end of the trail” in the Tlingit language, it’s a quiet town in northern Lynn Canal. In the last few years of the 19th century, during the Klondike Gold Rush, Haines was a resupply point for prospectors, and gold was eventually found in the nearby Porcupine District. Though gold once fueled this local economy, today, salmon, halibut, and black cod are the main sources of income.
When we arrived in Haines, we disembarked National Geographic Sea Bird to enjoy an assortment of activities. Guests rode bikes to a glacial lake, visited the ancient village of Klukwan on a rafting tour, tried their hand at fly fishing, enjoyed scenic flights over Glacier Bay glaciers, or explored the fishing town on foot.
