Today is our first trip to Cuba this season, and every moment has been a delight for our guests and all of the people with whom we’ve had the honor to engage. If we rewind the clock back to yesterday, we began our journey with an interesting visit with the caretakers at the famous Fusterlandia, a site decorated from floor to ceiling with brilliantly colored mosaics giving the feeling of walking through creator José Rodríguez Fuster’s limitless imagination. In the evening, it felt like we traveled back in time as we loaded into a variety of beautifully restored classic cars which seemed to have rolled right out of the early 1950s. We set out in style and had dinner at La Bonita, a beautiful, privately run restaurant in the lush Miramar neighborhood of Havana. We enjoyed the evening with delicious food, animated conversations, and our own private four-piece band.

We woke to clear skies and a cool breeze, looking north over the crystal blue waters. The morning brought us to Old Havana, the section of town whose narrow streets and ornate façade have defined the area for centuries. We had a delicious lunch overlooking the harbor at La Moneda Cubana, another privately run restaurant. For the afternoon, one group went to the Partagás Cigar Factory, followed by an amazing visit with car mechanics who restore classic autos. Another group of us visited with Tatiana Mena who gave us a tour of Ernest Hemingway’s house on his Finca Vigia estate. We followed that with drinks at Hemingway’s local bar, and a walk along the waterfront where he kept his boat. The day was not over. From there we met with Jorge Mario Sanchez who shared his insight into Socioeconomic Reform in Cuba. As the sun set, we walked down to have dinner at La Barraca in the gardens of the Hotel Nacional. Though our trip is only just beginning, we have already been warmed by the kindness of the Cuban people.
