On our first full day aboard Sea Cloud, we continued to explore and discover the many features of this splendid ship. After a leisurely breakfast, Captain John Svendsen explained the many complexities of sailing a tall ship. He provided a detailed and entertaining explanation of the procedure as the yards were braced and the crew went aloft to prepare for a tranquil morning under sail.
Our afternoon excursion took us to the charming city of Hvar on the island of the same name. With local guides Diana and Jana, we strolled through the town, first visiting the Franciscan monastery and its peaceful garden. A small museum inside the monastery features amphoras and other ceramics from a Roman-era shipwreck near the island, and an outer room holds a magnificent 17th-century painting of the Last Supper. Continuing our tour, we explored the town of Hvar, admiring the beautiful stonework and Venetian-style architecture that are visible throughout thanks to hundreds of years of Venetian rule. The winged lion, the symbol of Venice, is prominently displayed in the nobles’ quarter. We completed our tour in the town’s historic theater. First built in the 14th century, this recently restored gem is one of the oldest theaters in Europe.
Returning to the ship, we gathered on the Lido Deck for a welcome from Captain Svendsen, who introduced the officers and other staff who make sailing aboard Sea Cloud such a luxurious and flawless experience. This was followed by an elegant dinner in the ship’s dining room and stargazing with expedition leader Paula Tagle afterward.
